Chair’s Newsletter 2019

Chair’s Address

My three years as Chairman have flown by. It has been a most enjoyable and satisfying time, though not without its challenges. Our numbers are slowly rising and we have been fortunate to recruit three enthusiastic committee members for the coming year. Despite earlier concerns, I feel confident that we are in a healthier position. However I urge everyone to continue to recruit new members to ensure a more secure financial future.

I would like to thank Sarah for the excellent series of lectures she organised alongside all the other work she has done on our behalf. Her many years on the committee have enabled the Society to run smoothly. I wish also to thank members who hosted speakers and we welcome volunteers to do so for the coming year.

The 2018 Study Day with Sarah Dunant was a huge success.  My thanks go especially to Shirley who organised the day, including delicious quiches and salad for lunch. Thank you to the committee for providing the scrumptious biscuits and puddings.  I am very much looking forward to another excellent Study Day on October 5th 2019.

In April 2019 an interesting Day Trip to Hull was arranged by Caroline. This was well attended and was a most enjoyable day.  I thank you for that, Caroline, as well as thanking both you and Sarah for cheerfully serving refreshments prior to each lecture.

It was a great pleasure to welcome Lynda back to the committee and although I was unable to take part, I know that the excellent Away Visit she organised to Norfolk in June enabled members to enjoy a full and varied exploration of the area. Plans are afoot for a fascinating Away Visit in 2020 so watch this space and thank you, Lynda.

In addition to the committee members I have mentioned, I must thank Sue Young and Celia for their continued support and hard work. Brian Donnellan has joined us to update our website and to help us recruit through Social Media and Dexter continues to produce our publicity leaflets. I would like to thank Sue Willington for acting as Treasurer over the past two years, which has given her more than a few sleepless nights. She will be assisting Richard Brown to get to grips with the role despite her not being on the committee next year.

Last but not least, I owe a huge thank you to Rosemary for serving calmly and efficiently as Secretary for many years and for continuing to offer support to Michelle as Secretary in the future. I have no idea how many years Rosemary, Sarah and Caroline have clocked up between them on the committee but I cannot thank them enough on your behalf.

Finally, thank you to all our members for your continued support and encouragement, which I am sure Shirley will continue to enjoy as Chairman next year

With very best wishes
